None of this is luck. Canasta rewards patience, memory and a touch of nerve. Here is where I keep mine.

The pile is the prize
Whoever owns the discard pile usually owns the hand. A fat pile is a fortune sitting in plain sight, and everything you do should bend toward taking it, or stopping the other side from doing so.
Watch what your opponents collect, and never feed the player on your left. The card you throw away is the card they were praying for.

Freeze them out
Drop a wild on the pile and it is frozen for everyone. From then on, nobody lifts it without a natural pair in hand to match the top card.
Freeze when the pile is plump and you hold that pair, or simply to lock the door on opponents who are circling. A red three in the pile freezes it too, so mind those.

Wild cards are currency
Twos and jokers are the most powerful cards you hold. Every one you bury in a meld is one you cannot use to freeze the pile or finish a canasta.
Hoard a couple. Fifty and twenty on paper, but their real worth is leverage, so spend them like it.

Mind the threes
Red threes are pure bonus. Lay them straight down, a hundred each, eight hundred for all four. They commit you though, so get a meld working.
Black threes are your bouncers. One on the pile blocks the next player for a turn, and they only meld as you go out. Save one to slam the door just before you finish.

Natural beats mixed, a win beats both
A clean canasta of seven, no wilds, is worth five hundred. A mixed one is three hundred. Reach for clean whenever you can.
You need a canasta to go out at all, so a mixed one that closes the game beats a perfect one that never quite arrives.

Don't show your whole hand
Getting on the board matters, but melding everything the moment you can is a beginner's tell. Cards in hand are options, and options win piles.
Lay down enough to make your minimum and score your red threes, then keep your powder dry.

Time your exit
Going out ends the hand on your terms. Do it to deny a swelling pile, or to catch the other side holding a fistful of cards that now count against them.
Go out concealed, the lot in one turn with a canasta and nothing melded before, and you bank a two hundred bonus. Ask your partner first.

Play the people
The cards tell you plenty. The players tell you more. A hesitation, a glance, a discard thrown a touch too fast, all of it is information.
Count what has gone, read what is wanted, trust your partner. The table talks. Learn to listen.
